The Abduction of Betty and Barney Hill

Possibly no other UFO abduction case of the 20th century has received as much notoriety as the case of Betty and Barney Hill on the night of September 19, 1961 on U.S. Route 3. This is a rather long entry as it contains much relevant information. It’s definitely worth the read though. And so, with that said, down the rabbit hole we go.

The Hills were returning home to Portsmouth, New Hampshire that night from vacation at Niagara Falls. At approximately 10:30 pm., while traveling home, Betty noticed a bright light in the sky near Jupiter. She at first thought it was likely a falling star, but its movements were erratic and not crossing the sky in a manner characteristic of one. The claims of what happened next would change UFOlogy forever.

Batty and Barney Hill

The couple watched the light for a period of time before Barney pulled the car over in the area of Twin Mountain, New Hampshire so that they could get a better look and hopefully confirm what the object was.  Betty at first thought it was just an airplane. That soon changed when the circular craft with bright lights veered in their direction and started to descend rapidly. They hurried to the car and drove away. Barney drove slowly through Franconia Notch, a pass through the White Mountains of New Hampshire, in order watch the object. It stayed with them for a while before quickly descending again until hovering just above the road in front of them.

Barney was forced to stop in the road and exited the vehicle with his pistol and the binoculars. He saw what he claimed to be eight to eleven human-like figures watching him from the craft’s windows. One of them seemed to telepathically tell him “stay where you are and keep looking”. The aircraft began to draw closer and Barney ran back to the car exclaiming that “They’re going to capture us!”. They sped away, but there was no sight of the craft; there was only a dark, starless sky. The car shortly began to vibrate, their bodies tingled, and they heard a peculiar series of beeps and tones. They went into what might be described as a trance-like state and came to about 35 miles south of the encounter.

The Hills traveled home that evening uneventfully, however there were about two hours of time left unaccounted for. They were tired from the long journey and events and went to bed with only a fragmented memory of the 35 mile drive following the strange noises and vibrations. Before bed, Barney felt compelled to go to the restroom to examine his genitals. Warts would develop around his groin over the next few days. Betty insisted that their luggage be kept near the back door. Another peculiar occurrence is that their watches died never to run again (strong magnetic fields are a common characteristic of alleged UFO cases).

That morning after resting for a period of time Betty put her damaged dress from the night before in her bedside trunk. Shortly after, she took it out and put it in her closet, noticing the torn hem and broken zipper. Later, when she took it out of the closet, she noticed that there was a pink powder on the dress. She aired it out, decided to discard it due to the unexplained damage that it received that night, then changed her mind and retrieved it. Tests would be taken on samples of the dress over the years. A link to results can be found at the end of this article.

Betty phoned the Pease Air Force Base to advise them of the incident. She left out parts of the account as she claimed later to avoid appearing non-credible. The base initially confirmed an unknown aircraft in the area at the time, but soon changed the explanation to “inversion” and then “insufficient data”.

Then, after about ten days, Betty started having vivid dreams for a span of five days about their encounter. Betty, who had already felt that they had been abducted, described them to Barney. He dismissed them as he didn’t feel that they had been taken in any way. She wrote them in a log for record. The dreams consisted of them being taken from the car to the alien aircraft. The occupants separated them, to Betty’s dismay. She was advised by a being that she called “the examiner” that they were conducting tests on the difference between humans and their kind. “The examiner” took a lock of hair, skin samples, various other examinations and a sample obtained from a syringe into her naval. She found the puncture very painful until “the examiner” waved his hand taking the pain away. “The examiner” left the room and Betty spoke with “the leader”  while she looked at books in the exam area. She was told that she could keep one. When she asked where they were from, the one that she called “the leader” showed her a star chart which showed her the area. Later hypnosis sessions would reveal the description of this chart. There was of disagreement among the creatures as the Hills were set to return their car. It was agreed among them that the Hills may not have the book and would not even be allowed to remember the exams. The Hills were returned to the vehicle and advised not to drive away until they were gone. During an interview with NICAP (the National Investigations Committee on Ariel Phenomena), a civilian group who researched UFO cases, the subject of hypnosis came up as an option to try to retrieve the missing memories of that night. Soon, they were having hypnosis sessions with a Dr. Benjamin Simon. Barney was the first to go under hypnosis. He recalled very little as he kept his eyes closed out of fright for most of the missing time. He did, however, recall numerous times where eyes seemed to be “pushed into” his eyes. They communicated through telepathy. Also, there were tests similar to Betty’s as well as gaining sperm sample via a strange cup over his groin and a brief anal probe. His experience was so traumatic to him that the hypnotist made him forget again. Betty’s sessions were more detailed, however they contradicted her dreams in some instances. For example, the men had a different build. The hypnosis experience was difficult for both of them as at one point Barney got so upset that he vomited and Betty cried in pain during one of her sessions. Dr. Simon also triggered a post-hypnotic suggestion helping her to remember the description of the star map. Her drawing, as well as a comparison by an amateur astronomer named Marjorie Fish. Both renditions are pictured above.

The case is as controversial now as it was then. There are debatable points as well as ones that aren’t so easily dismissed. For instance, the Hills seemed to honestly believe that something traumatic happened. Also, they never sought attention. In addition, there were reports from both Pease Air Force Base and Concord Air Force Station of unidentified aircraft in the area in the hours leading up to the incident. They were soon dismissed and never fully investigated. Plus, there were tests performed on Mrs. Hill’s dress. One of these tests proved to have a very peculiar effect on germinating plants; they grew generally between 30 to 34 percent faster than plants not exposed to the water-soaked in her dress. The link to that test can be found  at the conclusion of this entry.

There are issues with the story though. Just prior to the description of the “humanoid figure” by Barney there was an episode of The Outer Limits that closely resembled the wraparound eye feature of the beings that Barney described. Barney denied ever seeing that episode. Psychiatrists at the time allegedly claimed that the sighting could be due to stress from being a mixed race couple. I personally feel that is a ridiculous notion and attribute it to the era in which it occurred. They were also very happy and not having any emotional conflicts. Critics also point to the fact that Mrs. Hill’s dreams don’t exactly coincide with her hypnosis statement. I find that a valid argument, but also make note that they were dreams and not memories. Dreams of events are rarely perfectly accurate. In addition to this, skeptics also point out validly that there was a lot of time between the occurrence and the hypnosis sessions. This provided a lot of time for the couple to share their stories. It would be very easy for the “memories” to intertwine with each other. Plus, whether justified or not, the Air Force did change their conclusion from detecting an unidentified craft eventually to insufficient data.

The case is very interesting as it was square one for UFO abduction cases. There are valid arguments for and against the claims. One can’t take a side without giving credence to the opposing view. That makes this case even more thought-provoking. To completely discard this case would be careless. It’s one of the most reliable cases of our time in spite of its inconsistencies.
